What's up, my friends! I'm Dr. Titus Chiu and this is The Modern Brain.

Anxiety is a serious health challenge

Many patients who make it to my office have been struggling with chronic neurological symptoms such as anxiety, concussion, or brain fatigue for months or even years and they've tried many different approaches.

They have been on medications and wanted to lower their dependence on it. Others haven’t tried medications but everything they’ve tried so far just didn't work yet they still want to avoid medications.

These patients want a safer alternative to medications to stop their anxiety, and rightfully so.

Many of the most common medications for anxiety come with a whole list of side effects. 

Don't get me wrong, medications can be life-saving in some situations like people who are in crises and are not able to find any other options to address their health concerns. 

 

Benzodiazepines may work ⁠— but at what price?

The most common medication for anxiety is what we call benzodiazepines. For many patients I've worked with, benzodiazepines have been a lifesaver for them. 

But as you know, and as you’ve seen in all the different commercials, those medications, come with many different side effects.

 

Sometimes, the side effects are even worse than the original symptoms! 

Brain fog, drowsiness, depression, problems with balance and coordination, the list goes on and on.  

So what’s a poor brain to do? 

The great news is that there are many safe and natural alternatives to medications for you. 

As long as you can understand what the root causes of your anxiety are, there's so much that we can do about it. 

 

The Unbalanced Brain

The first step to finding the right approach is to identify the root cause of your anxiety.

 

An Overactive Right Hemisphere

One of the most common unrecognized root causes for anxiety is an overactive right hemisphere of your brain. 

What do I mean by that? 

Well, your brain is made up of two hemispheres: the left and the right. 

People with an overactive right hemisphere tend to experience things like anxiety.

That makes a lot of sense because the right hemisphere of the brain helps us perceive and become aware of our internal sensations and feelings, as well as our emotions. 

Many patients I work with who struggle with anxiety typically have an overactive right hemisphere.

 

Broken Brakes on Stress Responses

In addition to processing emotions, the right hemisphere also helps to put the brakes on the stress response. 

And so when you have an overactive right hemisphere, not only do you feel your emotions intensely, you will also have trouble putting the brakes on your fight or flight response. 

When you add the two of those together what do you get? Crippling anxiety.

Crippling anxiety can keep you from doing the things that you love to do. Sometimes, it can even prevent you from wanting to get out of bed and leaving your house. 

So now that you know that an overactive right hemisphere of your brain is a very unrecognized but very common root cause for anxiety, you're probably wondering:

“Well, Dr. Chiu, what can I do about it?” 

 And the answer to that is simple: balance your brain. 

 

Balance Your Brain with Lavender Oil

How can we balance your brain? By activating the left hemisphere of your brain using lavender oil.

Research has shown that the active ingredient in lavender oil, or what we call linalool, has GABAergic properties. 

This means it acts in similar ways as the tranquilizing and calming neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). 

GABA is really important because it helps control overactivity in our brain. You can tell if your brain is overactive if you feel that your mind is racing, you can't stop your thoughts, or you are feeling worried all the time. 

One very common root cause of anxiety is not enough GABA.

Fortunately, research has shown that lavender oil works in the same way that anti-anxiety medications do, but with much fewer side effects. 

 

Calming Your Right Hemisphere with Lavender Oil

 So what are different ways that you can use lavender oil?

You can take a few drops and put it in an aromatherapy diffuser. 

Research has shown that lavender helps to shift between a right frontal lobe activation pattern to a left frontal lobe activation pattern. It helps to bring back balance to your brain. 

 

Breathe it in to your LEFT nostril

Here's a pro tip for you guys: if you have a bottle of lavender essential oil, try breathing it in through your left nostril.

Doing this specifically targets the left hemisphere of your brain or what we call the olfactory cortex, as well as the frontal lobe, leading to more of a brain balance. 

That's the number one brain hack that you can do to stop your anxiety now. 

If you try this out and it helps then guess what? One of the root causes of your anxiety most likely is an overactive right hemisphere. 

Another root cause to consider could be that you don't have enough GABA or the calming and tranquilizing neurotransmitter.

So continuing with this over time will help bring balance to your overactive right hemisphere, leading to brain balance and stopping your anxiety in the long run.
